Handwashing 101 – TIPS

Why is effective handwashing important?

  • Frequent hand-washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness. Regular hand washing helps prevent the spread of germs.
  • As you touch objects through the day, you accumulate germs on your hands.
  • People touch their face though the day  (eyes, nose and mouth) which then spreads germs from your hands
  • Remember kids need to wash their hands regularly too
    • Wash your hands with your child to show him or her how it’s done. To prevent rushing, suggest washing hands for as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice.
    • If your child can’t reach the sink on his or her own, keep a step stool handy.

According to the CDC, handwashing education in the community:

  • Reduces the number of people who get sick with diarrhea by 23-40%
  • Reduces diarrheal illness in people with weakened immune systems by 58%
  • Reduces respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by 16-21%
  • Reduces absenteeism due to gastrointestinal illness in schoolchildren by 29-57%

When to wash your hands

These days, you should always wash hands regularly, and definitely…

  • Before, during and after  preparing food or eating
  • After touching raw meat, poultry, fish or shell eggs
  • Before and after treating wounds or caring for a sick person
  • Inserting or removing contact lenses
  • After coughing or sneezing
  • After toilet use
  • Whenever  hands are visibly dirty
  • After handling animals or animal waste

Yeeeeeeew…..

A Food Safety Information Council survey found that most people don’t have the correct hand washing technique and an amazing 9 percent of women and 27 per cent of men didn’t wash their hands at all when observed in a shopping centre washroom.

The survey matches other estimates – a large US study suggested only 58 percent of men and 75 percent of women wash their hands after using a public bathroom.
