- Dishwashing powder is economical and gives you ability to modify how much you use per load
- A full load in dishwasher is more water-efficient than washing by hand
- Sparkle – looks after dishwasher by removing hard water stains (descaling) plus gives you spot free dishes
Is a rinse aid essential for your dishwasher?
- These days, yes. Modern dishwashers are designed to include rinse aid as part of the washing process.
- It helps dishes dry faster, helpful if you’re skipping the heat cycle to save energy,
- Rinse aid is released during the final hot water cycle and helps to limit spots from forming on items.
Benefits of using dishwashing powder – it’s cost effective!
- Dishwasher powder is generally the cheapest.
- Product tends to last for a long time before it needs to be replaced.
- You’re also able to use as much or as little as you need for specific dishwashing loads.
DISHWASHER HACKS & TIPS
Do you need to pre-rinse?
- Rinse food off dishes at the sink before loading to keep food from drying on and to help keep odors under control.
- If you’re running a cycle right away, just scrape off the food and leave it at that.
Dishwasher Loading 101
- Dirty bowls and plates should go on the bottom rack.
- Face bowls and plates towards where the water spray will be strongest.
- Knives and forks should be pointing down in the cutlery baskets
- Don’t block the water spray by putting large items in the direct way
- Secure any plastic or lighter items, you don’t want them knocking around in the dishwashing cycle.
- Pots and pans should be angled down for best results.
- Add rinse aid to soften water, help dry dishes and to get rid of water spots
Common mistakes for loading dishwashers
- Your water isn’t hot enough
- You fully rinse everything before it goes in
- You load dishes onto the top wrack
- You don’t leave any room between stacked items
- You load glassware on the bottom wrack
- You randomly put bowls and pans
- You overstack it!
- You put non dishwasher safe items in the dishwasher
- You just use the same setting every time (regardless of what is in the wash)
Should you put cutting boards in the dishwasher?
- Short answer, no.
- Cutting boards should be hand washed, the high heat and moisture can warp wooden boards.
Can you put silverware in the dishwasher?
- Technically you can…but you might notice tarnish on your silverware
- Why? Normally it would be natural oxidation (happens when silver is exposed to oxygen) but it could also be because you’ve washed the silver with stainless steel and the silver has oxidised.
- Listen to your granny and hand wash them to be safe.
What other items shouldn’t go in the dishwasher?
- Reactive metals – like copper or aluminium, should be kept out as should non-stick pans, in order to protect their coatings.
- Bone handled cutlery
- Cast iron items
- Fine bone china
- Hand painted ceramic
- Lead crystal
- Pewter Plastics – that are not labelled as dishwasher safe
- Pizza stones
- Sharp knives – high-carbon steel knives corrode in the dw, and can lose sharpness bumping against other items.
- Wooden items in general
Clean the filter in your dishwasher regularly
- Every dishwasher has a filter which stops large food particles clogging up the drain.
- Naturally enough, this filter accumulates dirt and grime.
- If you’re regularly using the dishwasher, you need to wash the filter once a month.
- To do this – simply remove the filter, and thoroughly wash with hot soapy water, then rinse and replace.
Clean your oven racks
- Pop them in a hot bath with Crystal, soak overnight.
- The next day spray with heavy multi and you will only need to rub lightly with a scourer. You can wrap in foil if you like with crystal inside the foil and keep the cleaner close to the rack.
